Zibi is one of the largest urban redevelopment projects proposed for the National Capital Region. It includes residential, commercial and communal redevelopment. Situated on the banks of the Ottawa River on Domtar lands, Zibi is located in both the City of Ottawa and the City of Gatineau, something that has never been done before. In Ottawa, Zibi rests on the western edge of downtown, consists of both the Chaudière and Albert Islands and is surrounded by the Ottawa River. In Gatineau, the lands are within the downtown core of the city and provide an opportunity to extend the city out to the banks of the river.
Scope of Work
Windmill Developments approached Miller McConnell Signs to develop a signage proposal which would outline a plan to achieve their main signage objectives relating to the Zibi Sales Centre opening.
Windmill’s main objectives were as follows: 1) to develop a creative approach to wayfinding that utilizes existing infrastructure where possible to support high impact signage directing traffic to the Sales Centre from both the Ottawa and the Gatineau side of the property in an effective manner. 2) In keeping with the “sustainability” aspect of this development, signage solutions should incorporate materials that are eco-friendly. 3) To maximize cost-effectiveness of the signage.
Windmill was looking for a creative, adaptable, and fast signage supplier who has a high capability of project management and problem solving. This sign supplier would work with Windmill to develop a solution to their needs while adapting to ongoing alterations.
Challenges and Solutions
This project was quite unique as it geographically spanned across to two provinces (Ontario & Quebec) and two municipalities (Ottawa & Gatineau), as well it involved a Federal component (National Capital Commission) . A project of this magnitude combined with this situation involves the revelation of new unforeseen challenges. Solutions to such challenges to be addressed quickly and efficiently in order to maintain the tight deadlines.
The best way to summarize the results of this project are in the words emailed to us from our client:
“I just wanted to say a most sincere thank you to you all for your commitment to our Zibi project. The launch would not have looked as great as it did were it not for your extra “above and beyond” efforts, patience, creativity and quality assurance. I could not be more pleased with the full experience of working with you both and your team. Never, in my 17 years of working with sign companies, have I encountered such a professional team. I will most certainly be recommending you to anyone looking for sign solutions and a great team.
I felt like you were true partners in this and look forward to continuing to work with you as the project grows.”
