This exciting and unique project at 47 Clarence Street in The Byward Market took almost three years to complete from conception to completion. Morguard hired Miller McConnell Signs in 2011 to replace the large analogue clock on the tower above The Empire Grill. What followed was a lengthy and rewarding process that has completely changed the face of 47 Clarence Street and this part of the Market.
Scope of Work
Started by former CEO and founder Jim Miller and completed by current CEO Craig McConnell, this project saw Miller McConnell signs replace the old analogue clock at 47 Clarence with three 76″ by 88″ high-definition digital video screens.
This scope of work also required Miller McConnell Signs to work with and engineering firm and construction company to reconstruct and reinforce the clock tower at 47 Clarence to accommodate the heavy video screens. Started in 2011, this lengthy and rewarding installation process was finally completed in March 2014.
Morguard engaged Miller McConnell Signs to help oversee the complete renewal of the iconic clock tower at 47 Clarence. Their goal was to find an original and innovative use for the clock tower that would turn the building into an iconic focal point in The Byward Market.
Challenges and Solutions
There were numerous challenges along the way for 47 Clarence, not the least of which were bylaw negotiations with the City of Ottawa and the Byward Market BIA to get the proper signage permits. After a long negotiation, a variance to the sign by-law was granted and we were finally given the go ahead to begin producing and installing the video screens.
This success, however, was short lived. Soon after, engineers determined that the tower was not substantial or strong enough to hold the new video screens. As such, reconstruction teams went to work on a new tower structure in October 2014. Once this reconstruction was completed, the Miller McConnell Signs team came in to finish the job and install the three brand new video screens in the new clock tower.
Morguard is completely delighted with the results of this lengthy and innovative process, and Miller McConnell Signs couldn’t be happier with their satisfaction. The screens are now fully functional and ready to start reshaping the face of Clarence Street and The Byward Market.
